List of Slides for Devil's Postpile NM
- The lava flows at Devil's Postpile date back
to 3 - 3.5 million years ago. Columnar jointing developed as the lava cooled.
Today the basalt splits between the columns, so that symmetric pieces accumulate
as talus at the base of the slope.
- Ends of columns show as regular hexagons
on the top surface of the basalt.
- This is the best example of columnar jointing
in California.
