Mt. Rainier

Sunset light

Surface waters
flow down and outward from the summit of the volcano, forming a radial drainage pattern around Mt. Rainier.
Bow Canyon
is a narrow part of Cowlitz Gorge, near Cowlitz Glacier.
Glaciated surfaces show evidence of
abrasion and plucking
to form roches moutonnes.
Nisqually Glacier
flows down the southern side of the mountain.
Emmons Glacier,
the largest in the park, originates at the summit and descends to the White River.
Columnar basalt
forms as lava flows cool and contract.

Much of the volcanic rock of Mt. Rainier is andesite - intermediate in composition. The darker blob is a
xenolith
(fragment of other rock incorporated into the lava).
