Elasticity Grand Challenge Workshop
First Call
From: Jay BassCc: Stephen MarshakSent: Wednesday, April 07, 2004 4:17 PMSubject: Elasticity Grand Challenge Workshop: Talks and Abstracts
To all workshop participants:This is a general call and invitation for talks and abstracts for our Elasticity Grand Challenge Workshop, which will be held on May 8 in Urbana-Champaign.I am hoping (expecting!) to have talks by all of the principals of this collaboration, as well as by students and post docs who have been involved with research related to the goals of the project. We will also have a number of participants who were not part of the original grant but whose research is closely related to the EGC activities. These attendees are strongly encouraged to make presentations. The topics for discussion at the workshop are flexible, but I would like to see us touch on the following areas:1) Pushing forward the technology for elasticity measurements and computations; Attaining higher pressures and temperatures.2) New technologies.3) Interlaboratory comparisons and calibrations, especially comparing different techniques.4) Sources of error in elasticity measurements.5) Standard materials for high PT calibrations and interlaboratory/intertechnique comparisons.6) Fruitful collaborations and directions to pursue.
At present I envision talks about 15 minutes long. Please submit your abstracts by April 26. You may submit abstracts for more than one talk. The workshop will include presentations, and ample discussion time.
Outcomes of the workshop:1) We will write a short report that will be submitted to program managers at NSF. Your abstracts will be included in that report. We will also formulate a yearly progress report that all PI's can submit to NSF.2) Most important is that we inform each other about our individual activities, and identify productive directions and collaborations for our future work.
For your information, I am attaching a copy of the original introduction the EGC proposal that was submited to NSF. It is probably enough to convey the flavor for the project. The full proposal will not be distributed for confidentiality reasons.
Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.
Cheers,
