Overall, the purpose of lab is: to give you experience in picturing structural geometry in 3-D, to give you experience working with maps and cross sections, and to teach you practical techniques that will be valuable in structural geology and subsurface mapping.  There are two lab sections.  Please go to your assigned section so that the labs are not overcrowded.

The purpose of the lab time is to work on, and hopefully complete, the assignment for the day.  Therefore, the TA will not give a long lecture at the beginning of the lab time; the TA's primary purpose is to answer questions during the lab time.  Because of this arrangement, it is imperative that students complete the reading assignments before coming to lab.  To encourage this practice, there will be a five to ten minute quiz at the beginning of most labs that will cover the basic concepts and terminology presented in the assigned reading.  The TA will be available to answer questions by appointment, but please remember that the TA is a student too and needs time for his own work.  Therefore, try to get most of your problems sorted out before the lab time is over.  Generally, you do not need to read the entire chapter of M&M listed in the syllabus.  The TA will give specific page numbers for a weekly lab assignment.  Lab assignments are due by 5:00 PM on the Monday following a given lab.  The TA will provide a drop-off location.

In the map interpretation section, it is important that you follow templates exactly, and produce clean "office copies" of your cross section.  This part can be viewed as a preparation for field camp.
