Review & Study Tips for GEOL 117 The Oceans:

General Suggestions

1. Come to class! At least a couple of questions on each exam will be over material covered exclusively in lecture and not covered in either the web lecture notes or the textbook.

2. Using your reading notes, website lecture notes, and personal lecture notes, organize the material into the following categories:

A. Synthesis Process Models (i.e. Sea Floor Spreading)
B. Historical Information (i.e. Leading figures in developing the science of oceanography)
C. Stand-Alone Factual Information (i.e. Water is a universal solvent due to the dipolar structure of the H2O molecule)

3. Section 2A above is a crucial part of your preparation process. For this you will need to identify the 1 or 2 summary diagrams explaining the BIG-PICTURE process models that were emphasized in the lecture. Photocopy, enlarge, and write directly on the diagrams, making sure that you understand how all parts of the diagrams are linked, what each part of the diagram represents, and how cycling or cause-and-effect relationships occur across the diagram. This is a great category for study groups and quizing each other about the basic diagrams.

4. Memorize information in the 2C category above if necessary because basic facts are necessary to work out the more complicated processes (category 2A). Use flash cards or again utilize study groups if possible.
