El Niño
Our mild weather for most of this winter is partly caused
by an ocean phenomenon known as El Niño. Parts of the Pacific
ocean are abnormally warm this winter, and this has altered weather
patterns around the world. The reddish areas in the image below
indicate abnormally warm waters in the last big El Niño
event from 1982.
